John and I got the chance to have a “boys” getaway for his birthday (Saturday, May 24th).  We started out in Maryland on Thursday, and traveled up to Cape Cod arriving at 10:30 pm.  We got out and fished the Cape Cod Bay surf, and went out with a light tackle charter captain as well.  We soaked bait on Friday at high tide on Sunken meadow beach in Eastham. Here is the best pic.  We got one nice pull down, but the fish did completely take the bait, and got off.  C’est la vie!

Nofishbut a good effort

On his birthday, we went out with a local captain, Jeff Smith of Wellfleet. We ran into some 300+ acres of striped bass, and the birds working the school were a sight to behold. We left Sesuit Harbor at 0600 am. First line was in the water by 0615. Lines went tight right away and we kept pulling fat, gorged bass until we were tired by 0830.  As Jeff said, “the bass were eating well.  Most fish were caught on soft plastics, and some topwater plugs.  John’s first keeper of the day is below.

Stephen caught some too!

Having pulled at least 50 fish with 10 keepers out in the Bay Jeff asked us if we wanted to “roll the dice”, and get into some potentially bigger fish.  So, off we headed for Barnstable Harbor. Inside the harbor we had the best view of the light house.

All these boats were using this as a pass through, and we stopped to drift through the area pitching soft plastics on jig heads…..with great success.  The fish below were great examples of the early summer bite available in the area to those who know when and where to explore.

Here is what we caught:

Jeff’s Kick A$$ motor pushed his boat really fast:

All in all this was a great weekend with a lot of good memories established for future reference, and sore arms to boot.
